Satara district has contributed its name in various fields as well as in social activities. The name of Satara city and district is being remembered in the country and abroad because of its great achievements. Innumerable social institutions and trusts have tried to create better life of the Satarians.
The largest educational institute not only in the state and country but also in Asian Continent, founded by late Dr. Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil. Rayat Shikshan Sanstha is at Satara.This institute has nearly about 689 branches throughout the state including 17 hostels right from K. G. to Post graduate courses in several streams of education. Approximately 20,000 staff and five lacks students taking education.

Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil, the Dnyan Maharshi and founder of 'Rayat Shikshan Sanstha' started first Vasatigriha (Hostel) at Kale in 1919. It was formally inaugurated by the great freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi, who admired Karmaveer's Educational and social work. Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil introduced 'Earn and Learn' scheme and 'self help' and 'self relience' schemes. Br. P. G. Patil is the student of the 'Earn & Learn' scheme.

The first women teacher Savitribai Phule was born at Naigaon Tal- Khandala Dist- Satara. She promoted and ported aneversory of Savitribai is celebrated with various worked for the education of girls in British rule. She activities every year at Mahatma Jyotirao Phule by all means in his every activity. The Naigaon.The great social workers Mahatma Jyotirao Phule is also from Katgun Tal- Khatav of Satara District.
Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar founder of Indian Constitution had completed primary education of four years during the period of year 1900 to 1904 at Satara High School now knon as Pratapsinha High School. His admission in first standerd occurred on 7th Nov. which day is being celebrated as School Enterance Day every year. His name as Bhiva Ramaji has been entered and signature is also in school register.

Art and culture in socity are as important as the food and blood for the body. As India is famous for its glorious and golden culture in the world, Satara district has its special significance in the cultural field.
There are several cultural centers that try to cultivate the culture in socity. The cultural centres such as Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan and Yasahwantrao Chavan Sanskrutik Bhavanencourage the young generation to perform their art and other cultural activities. Pratik Theaters of Wai is one of the well known Natya Sansthas in the district that create so many artists like T. V. star Savita Prabhune. Shyamsundari Nritya Natya and Kala Academy of Satara gives the basic skills in Kathhak and Bharat Natyam at Natraj Mandir. It organizes the programmes for the dance lovers of Satara.
The founder of Marahti Vishwakosh Laxmanshastri Joshi & Maharashtra Bhushan Shahir Sable also belongs to Satara district legend drama actors Chittaranjan Kolhatkar, Damu Anna Malvankar, Pdf. Chhota Gandharva, Vijay Kadam, Sayaji Shinde are also from Satara. The Well Known poets B.C. Mardhekar, Kavi Girish, Lierary Persons N.H. ApateUparakar Laxman Mane,V.B. Bodhe, Dr. A.H. Salunkhe, DR. Narendra Dabholkar are from Satara district.
The modes of transport and communication are as important and valuable as the blood veins in the body. The common mode of transport in the district is roadways transport. It is our great pride that the most remote part of the district is connected at least with the means of roadways. But at the same time in some parts of the thick forests that covered the Patan Mahbaleshwar& Jawali talukas, the patients are being carried in the cradles. They have to make any type of communication by walk covering the area nearby about 15 to 20 kms.

The main rivers of Satara district are Koyna and Krishna. The Krishna is one of the three largest sacred rivers of southern India. Approx. 172 kms.of the river course falls inside the district. The Krishna river begins on the eastern brow of the Mahabaleshwar plateau and the source is about 4500 ft. above sea level.
Kudali, Urmodi, Venna and Tarali are small feeder rivers of Krishna. Koyna is the largest tributary of the Krishna in the district. Neera and Manganga rivers are the two representative of the Bhima drainage in the north and north-eastern parts of the district respectively.
